Cy, Cat with Single Eye

This photo is not for the faint-of-heart... AP reports on Cy (short for Cyclopes), a cat with only one eye and no nose.

Actually, the photo is real, according to many sources, like the AP.

“The AP turned to the National Institutes of Health’s Web site, which has a name for the medical condition, “holoprosencephaly.” An AP photo editor also took extensive steps to confirm that Cy was not a hoax. He had the cat’s owner, Traci Allen, ship him her memory card. I read that when Cy was born, she was held in the arms of her human throughout the night, until she died the following day. A sad but sweet story. I’m glad that poor Cy experienced love and warmth during her short life. It bothers me that a museum is now selling postcards with her picture on them – being born with no eyelid and no nose is nothing to celebrate.– Maryann (Friday, Apr 7 2006)
